I also liked that scene, but for a different reason. The imagery was so strong I could see everything that the cave - the barrels, the secret trap door, etc.

Wow this is a fascinating detail, thumbs up!bookowlie wrote: ↑06 Jun 2018, 20:20 You're ten steps ahead of me! When I read the book, I wasn't sure if all of the details about the Medici family were correct. I just googled Giuliano Medici and it turns out he really had a illegitimate son with his mistress Fioretta, and his son grew up to become Pope Clement VII.

Kind of reminds one of a similar scene with Jack and Rose in Titanic.Amcdanel86 wrote: ↑22 Jun 2018, 10:01 my favorite scene is when Leonardo is painting Fioretta and Giuliano walks in the room.
I wonder if that does happen in real life. Don't nude models deserve privacy?

Oh yes, I completely agree! It was very strongly written, I felt like I was standing right there with them. The emotional weight in conjunction with the imagery was masterful.

I agree that that scene was entertaining! I don't think I'd normally enjoy reading about a woman giving birth, but I thought it was pretty realistic and amusing, the way she went off and yelled about whatever came to her mind.Miriam Molina wrote: ↑04 Jun 2018, 20:38 Belle Ami paints a lot of memorable scenes in this story. The three love affairs, Leonardo's role, and the luxurious locations are rich with luscious images.
My favorite scene is Fioretta in the throes of childbirth. I found the narrative and dialogue very entertaining.

Fioretta also stood up to Giuliano's mother and was very assertive about her wishes for the baby's upbringing. Of course, she knew she might be dying so that might have made her bolder.Bonnie Shelby wrote: ↑25 Jun 2018, 10:08I agree that that scene was entertaining! I forgot about that scene - good catch! It was very suspenseful because they could have been captured by the Nazis at any moment. If they had been caught, Gerhard would have been treated especially harshly since he was basically going AWOL.Miriam Molina wrote: ↑25 Jun 2018, 17:22 I also liked the escape from the Uffizi via the secret corridor. Sophia and Gerhard watched the bridges collapsing into the Arno. Wonderful imagery!
