Toni the Superhero is an illustrated children’s book written by R.D. Base and illustrated by Debbie Hefke. Written in the third person perspective, this book is the first book in a series of Toni the Superhero books.
In the illustrations, Toni is dressed as a superhero, but the book does not focus on Toni’s superhero powers. Instead, it focuses on activities that any child would enjoy doing like playing with friends, reading books, swimming in the pool, racing against friends, dancing in the living room, and drawing pictures. It also includes Toni doing chores such as helping his mom with the dishes as well as sweeping and dusting his house. While Toni is seen doing ordinary things, he wears his superhero costume during most of his activities. This shows that superheroes can enjoy doing ordinary activities, but they still need to complete their chores. One of the things that I like about this book is that it centered on Toni doing ordinary activities which make him a character that children are able to relate to.
Filled with bright and colorful illustrations, this book is great for children who are learning how to read. Some of the illustrations take up two pages, while most of the illustrations fit in one page. The short and simple sentences that accompany the illustrations provide an easy way for kids to master reading and understanding words. The pictures also provide a great way for parents to ask their children about common objects and colors that appear in the book. This could help facilitate the discussion between parents and kids about various items in the book.
There isn’t a plot line which makes this book stand out from traditional books. The main purpose of this book is to introduce young readers to the world of literature through simple sentences and colorful illustrations. Exposure to common words like “to” and “likes” create a good opportunity for children to practice consonant words and vowel sounds. Most of the sentences start with “Toni likes” which is repetitive but allows children to recognize common words found in the book.
Overall, I would rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. The vivid illustrations coupled with the simple sentences makes it appealing to kids who are just learning how to read. I didn’t notice any grammatical errors or spelling mistakes either. I would recommend this book to children from three to five years old.
