I remember back when I was a little girl, “little red riding hood by Brothers Grimm” was my favourite novel. I have read the book so many times I have lost count. I have always shied away from reviewing children books so I have to admit that Toni the superhero by R.D Base is my first children’s book review. Just like little red riding hood, Toni the superhero is relatable and memorable.
In today’s world, people refer to the term superhero when describing a person with superpowers and who also saves the world. Movies likes “superman” have made billions selling this narrative. We have believed for so long that you need to have extraordinary abilities to be a superhero but this children’s book is here to dispense that myth. Someone was once said, to be extraordinary, you need to do ordinary things in an extraordinary way.
This is not your average he began to fly or throw cobwebs out of his hand kind of story, this is the story of an ordinary boy called Toni who does ordinary things like playing, jumping, swimming and helping in an extraordinary manner. He does all these little acts so lovingly that it earns him the title ‘superhero'
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars first because it is simple enough for a child to read and understand. Secondly, it is accompanied by pictures hence it can easily attract and keep a child’s attention and lastly, it is short enough to be a bedtime story.
Most parents prefer to choose a book for their children that has a moral lesson in it. This book reminds us that superhero’s walk around us every day we just have to open our eyes and see them. They may not shoot cobwebs of their fingers, or stop planes from crashing by merely holding them, but they exist and they leave their lives doing simple things in an extraordinary manner.
Most children value superhero stories and movies since they perceive superheroes as leaders or role models. Toni has proven to be a good role model to children by assisting in domestic works as a child like dusting, sweeping and helping elders such as parents. Moral values and discipline are essential to the raising of children in both school and at home, something which the book advocates for. I recommend this book to mothers who love to read to their children.
