Written by R.D. Base and illustrated by Debbie Hefke “Toni- The Superhero” is a children’s comic book designed for 2 to 5 year olds. The cover image depicts Toni in his superhero costume holding a broomstick and a cat, with books and play ball near him. It clearly sets the ground for the story of Toni, who seems like a winner and able kid in every sphere.

The blurb reads quite simple. Toni is a little boy with extraordinary powers, but he likes to do ordinary things too. The book takes us to find out what Toni likes to do when he’s not busy saving the world. The story has just a few sentences and a lot of pictures, just as kids would like it. Tiny tots would look forward to their reading time with this book.

We are introduced to Toni, a thin high spirited kid, just like every other school going child. But there is one specialty to Toni, he’s a superhero. Those elaborate red and blue costume complete with yellow gloves, boots and mask truly make him look like a superhero. We then learn why he is considered so special. Toni likes to read- there are several books around him which he reads while also playing with his cat. He likes to rescue animals, draw with his crayons, play with his friends, and jump in parks and on logs.

Toni is very active child. He likes to run too. He usually participates in races and other sports with his classmates. He likes to swim, sing and dance with his sister. He helps his mother to wash the dishes, sweep and mop the floor, and dust the house. Toni likes to eat everything served at home- apple, sandwich, fruit juice, carrots and broccoli. He is not a fussy or picky eater. He sleeps and wakes up on time too. Thus, Toni is a terrific superhero.

I really liked the illustrations in the book. It showed kids of different color and physique. Kids would surely be inspired to learn to do all that Toni does, since anyone can be a super hero. This message was apt for the comic book, and parents should consider reading this to their kids. The pictures are really cute and pretty. The author R.D. Base is a mother of three young boys. She was an avid reader as a kid and still finds time to read, watch good movies and relax at home with family. Her talent shows in this comic. I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars.
