Nine Princes in Amber by Roger Zelazny, book one of The Great Book of Amber. This one is technically the first sentence of the physical book as my copy contains the whole series in one book.It was starting to end, after what seemed most of eternity to me.
However, I've just started book two, so here's that opening line as a bonus!
