The book "And Then I Met Margaret" by Rob White is a motivational, inspiring and nonfictitous literary piece. The book follows a chronological order of the author's life from childhood to adulthood. The twenty-one chapters of the book each has its own story. These stories being the personal experiences of the author. These events are narrated to readers in a captivating and engaging manner. From the start of the book, readers meet the teachers and guardians (Gurus), who knowingly and unknowingly have left a mark on the author's life through their actions.
This book has a 'what goes around comes around' thing. Although the author does not meet all the Gurus in the future, but at various points in the life of the author, he seizes the opportunity to share his acquired knowledge to those he meets later in the future. An experience that stuck is 'Craving Lilac Mints', and how what the author learnt was passed on to shape Jose's life for the better.
Something to be commended in the book is the openness with which it was written. It pretty much felt like the author was playing out his life, and it was not even boring. There were vivid descriptions of people and events. The author tells of the good, bad, and the ugly of his life. For instance, when he cheated in an exam or when his wig fell off onstage. This book simply tells us as it is.
The book is also life changing, it deals with everyday life, its temptations and problems. The author has been there, done that. There were problems, ranging from financial pitfalls, indecision, as well as stepping out on one's own. These problems at one point or another, someone close to us or we ourselves face. This book is like learning from another person's mistakes and daring attitude. The myth believed and the stark reality discovered, goes to tell that the societal way of doing things, is not always the right way. It has been learnt that it is most important to always be one's self at all times. Through Margaret, it's been hammered to stop living in one's own bubble.
While reading this book, I spotted five errors of tense, duplication and preposition. However, I still rate it 4 out of 4 stars. I recommend this book to everyone, those who have a zeal for life, who wants to take fate into their own hands. This book is a do-it-yourself guide.
