And Then I Met Margaret: Stories of Ordinary Gurus I’ve Met is a fiction book based on Rob White’s life experiences that lead him from being just an ordinary boy from a small mill-town to a successful entrepreneur in search of life purposes.
Rob White grew up in a small town that had expectations for every man and woman in the village. The villagers in his place believed the young men were destined to work at either one of the two local factories located in the small town. The moment he chose to continue his studies to college, he felt alienated by his own decision. However, this very decision had released him from the stereotype life his community had served him into a world with more opportunities and adrenaline rush adventures. Graduating from University of Massachusetts, he began his teaching career for 17 years, before he unleashed his unknown potentials and become a successful entrepreneur in real estates and restaurants industries.
The author’s writing pattern is mostly about the lessons he learned at the beginning of his life from family and friends which gave an impact to his perception when he came across similar situation later in his life. He sometimes passed the wisdom he gained, to the people that were in the same condition as he was before.
He had met many ordinary gurus that later taught him valuable lessons instantly or decades later in his life, since he was a little boy. There are 21 Chapters in his book, with 21 different stories that inspire him towards being a better person with optimism. All of his encounters with ordinary gurus had prepared him to become someone that is rich spiritually and mentally.
My favorite part of the book is the part where he mentioned about the unleashed potentials that he was afraid to explore. Not only this is common to our everyday life, it also shows that he is too a human with fears like all of us. He is all flesh and bones just like all of us. He wrote about his downfalls and how he managed to stand upright after learning important lessons from family, friends, even strangers in his life who straightened his view on the importance of living life with honesty, self-worth and modesty.
His positivity towards managing a devastated situation is something that I adore the most. The way he set his priority straight, when he handled Porsche incident after the lesson he learned in bull competition located in Spain was remarkable. He could have handled the situation with anger, but soon to realize there were more important things in life to be thankful to.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. It has a very good structure and writing that is so simple and yet managed to deliver the message he wanted to. I recommend this book to the people that need help in finding life purposes. Perhaps, this could be your unexpected guru, as it is to me.
