Puffy and the Formidable Foe is a fiction book for children written by Marie G. Lepkowsky, Ann M. Hannon, and Margaret B. Hannon. It is very easy to read and would make a perfect story for bedtime. The main character is an adorable cat that is not a fan of taking baths and faces an unfortunate adventure when straying from home.
This book is suitable for a wide range of ages. The message conveyed is interesting enough for a pre-teen and if you have to read this book to 2-year-olds who may not completely understand what is being read to them, they can easily follow the rhythm of the narrative since there are rhyming words.
The story of Puffy provides a powerful lesson that can be very useful later in life. It shows youngster what a mistake it is to go away from home and the consequences it may bring. That is, in my opinion, one of the reasons why parents would be satisfied with having chosen this book.
The illustrations are colourful and they are similar to a child’s drawing, which I think helps to draw the young reader’s attention to the story and the characters. There is an extra sheet of paper for colouring the authors have included to reward good reading. Apart from that, I think adding an extra sheet of paper makes a very fun post-reading activity and make children feel more involved in the story. My 2-year-old daughter liked this idea very much since she felt as she was adding an extra sheet of paper to the book.
Only by reading the title can one imagine that this book allows children to learn rich vocabulary, and “formidable” is not the only word youngsters may be interested in. Kids are also encouraged to identify rhyming words and work with the story’s plot to build up critical thinking.
Something I appreciated a lot is that the authors are very open to receiving emails from their readers, which is not something I see very often on children books. They have included an e-mail address in the book and they show interest in allowing kids and their parents to make the most out of the story.
I really enjoyed reading this book to my daughter and doing some of the activities proposed by the authors. That being said, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars and I would recommend it to kindergarten teachers and parents who want their children to learn big words.
