I don't mind when it's high fantasy, a battle between the forces of good and evil to determine the fate of the universe, because I expect the story to be big. In fact, in the case of these types of books, a small page count would put me off. How could you tell an epic, world-changing battle between the forces of good and evil in under a thousand words. Again, historical novels focusing on events such as the two world wars need large books.
However, if it was a story about one man and his journey to catch a fish, I don't think 700 pages is needed.
