Slow reads...

Like, "does this book have a ending?"

And when you conclude...

Like, "phew!"
Not sure if this was meant for me or not. Anyway, it's not that type of slow read. It's more of a very slow pace due to the frequent detailed introspection by the main characters in alternating POV. There is also just a really slow pace to the story, almost as if it's in slow motion at times. It's still a very good book.

@bookowlie

I hear you. But how was the build up close to the end?

Basically I thought there was a slow pace throughout the book. Slow, but steady. The alternating points of views contributing to the slow pace, but were certainly not the only reason for it.

Leon, your description of slow books was definitely something I could relate to! And every time I attempt to read a slow book, it ruins reading for me that much more in the future. It makes it more of a chore and a stressor, rather than something enjoyable. (One good reason I'm not on the review team--it just sucks away my energy to try to plow through something that never gets there!!) No offense to the author--this does look like a great book--but I can understand why BookOwlie took off a star. To me, trying to read something with no forward momentum is worse than watching grass grow or paint dry, ya know? It's just HARD!

@zeldas-lullaby

Lol! Some books are long enough to be a trilogy.

I read about a quarter of this novel. Though I personally wasn't ready for the amount of strong language, the imagery is indeed superb. I've had a newfound interest in military fiction lately. Great review!

This is a wonderful review, and the book sounds very interesting! I doubt I'll have a chance to find a copy, since my schedule's been really tight and I don't have much time for slower-paced books, but if I see it around, I'll definitely consider it.

Thanks! When you finish the book, let me know what you think about the rest of the book. I don't remember the amount of strong language being excessive. It might be I read a book a few months ago with such an excess of curse words throughout the book that anything I read after that seems tame. :)

RussetDivinity, Thanks for taking the time to read my review. Although the book is slow paced, the writing is excellent.

Wonderful review, bookowlie! Stories about wartime and the affects it has on people has always intrigued me. It helps me to remember the bravery these people face. Such a great concept for a book!
