Used to be a stickler for buying new but now I don't really mind as long as they're in good condition. I would never buy a used book as a gift for someone else though.

I agree. I would never give a used book as a gift. However, I buy and trade used paperback books all the time from our local book exchange. I have found some really interesting used books from a variety of venues; books that the library or bookstores no longer carry. I also enjoy buying new books as well though. One never knows where that "gem" of a book will be found used or new. Call me crazy, but I get so excited looking through other people's boxes of used books as well.

I get excited going through people's books too!

I have bought books new from book store chains, I have bought them from second hand bookstores, I have bought them from thrift stores and yard sales. If the book is in at the least fair condition, and I think i will read it, or it happens to be by an author I am collecting I will buy it. I do tend to prefer older gently used books, as I feel they have more character.

If it is a series that I'm in love with I like to buy them new. If it's something I have no history with or am just starting out then I don't mind buying them used.

I love buying books because I feel like they're mine. You know what I mean? I don't buy my books used, I buy mine new. I always right the date that I got it to add it to my book shelf. All my books are new- it's pricier but it's worth it.

I buy my books new or get them from others new as gifts but I've never given a used one as a gift and don't mind getting the used ones as gifts.

I usually get them new. I'll get them old if I'm buying a reference book since those tend to be really expensive. I don't think I'd give a used book as a gift unless there was a sentimental reason for doing so. Or, like I said before, it is a really expensive reference book.

I buy old books. I only consider buying new books if they are first editions or if the books are from my favourite authors.

Kinda poor so I buy the old/used books, borrow from friends/nearby library or get the free ebooks.
