Kenny the Koala is excited about the visitors that are coming to Bryant's Animal Zoo. When they arrive, he eagerly watches as the zookeeper introduces him and his parents. However, Kenny is upset when some of the visitors call him a koala bear. How does Kenny react to this mistake, and does the mistake get cleared up?

I couldn't find anything to dislike about No, I Am Not! Says Kenny the Koala by Joanne Telcide-Bryant. It's a very cute story with a simple plot. It conveys facts about koalas and how they are not bears, which I also enjoyed learning more about. And it helps children learn about communication through social-emotional learning techniques. There are also comprehension and discussion questions to make children think more critically about the story.

I loved the colorful illustrations by James Telcide, especially those of the koalas. They were nicely done, and Kenny, in particular, was adorable and was my favorite thing about the book. I also liked that the characters all had clear expressions that went along with what was occurring in the story and matched the emotions the characters were feeling.

The vocabulary used is good for young children. The book has a glossary for words they aren't likely to know, like continent and bellow, so they will be able to expand their vocabulary. There are a few words that they would need help with pronouncing, like eucalyptus and squeaky. The writing and sentence structure are simple enough for young children still learning to read without being too simple for older children.

Overall, this is a wonderful book that I recommend to parents and teachers of children ages 5 to 8. Any child who loves animals and enjoys learning more about them will like this book. There were no editing errors, so it fully deserves 4 out of 4 stars.

I love the communication this book teaches children and the fact that you always declare who you are irrespective of what people call you.
