Did you know there are still bands of wild horses in America? Did you know that the Bureau of Land Management is rounding up more and more of these wild horses? Blue Zeus by Carol J. Walker follows Blue Zeus and his family, as well as other horses and their families, as they are rounded up and put into pens that are too small with conditions that are almost too horrible to mention.

This book covers a subject that deserves to be discussed. Wild horses, used to being free, deserve a place on our land as much as any other wild animal. Yet, if the Bureau of Land Management has their way, there will no longer be any wild horses roaming around Wyoming. The author brings attention to a subject that many, including me, are unaware of, and she does so in a way that will grab and keep your attention.

By the end, I fell in love with the horses. Ms. Walker made me feel emotions that I didn't think possible for beings I had never met. The images she draws with her words are poignant and meaningful.

Cover to cover, pictures of these horses fill the pages. They are colorful and candid. The pictures truly bring the story to life, allowing the reader to see that these are real animals. There are so many great shots that I can't even begin to pick a favorite. In addition, the author does well at captioning most so that the reader knows what he or she is looking at.

Perhaps, the most helpful part of the book comes at the end. The author offers resources where the reader can learn more about the Bureau of Land Management and horse roundups. She even has her own blog where you can learn more. There are also organizations to which you can donate to help the cause.

There was only one small issue I noticed within the book. The author speaks as though all her readers know terms surrounding horses. For example, terms like "pinto" and "roan" are common but are not explained. However, the book is edited well, and I had no other dislikes.

Because of the exceptional quality of this book and the message it conveys, I rate Blue Zeus 4 out of 4 stars. The book is exceptionally edited; I noticed no errors. I recommend it to anyone that loves animals and photography lovers. It would make a great coffee table book and maybe even strike up some important conversation surrounding the message. Because the pictures are so lifelike, I do recommend the physical version of the book. The e-book doesn't quite do the pictures justice. Though there are too many words for children, they would love to look at the pictures. Family members or educators could summarize the story to draw attention to the subject from an early age. You might want to have a box of tissues nearby, though, as it will get you right in the heart.
