Running the Sahara by Marcel Nickler is about an ultramarathon that is 251km long, Moroccan Marathon Des Sables. This ultramarathon is perceived as the toughest foot race on Earth. This book is a wonderful chance to sit back and witness the journey while being in the comfort of your room, the six days in the desert, running a marathon, you’ve brought all six days meal prepacked, a bag with minimum belongings and you are taking everything in mind and running towards the next checkpoint. To be physically and mentally equipped to run the marathon is a definite prerequisite. The author has mentioned every detail he had taken care of while running the marathon.

Desert and competition don’t sound right to an ordinary mind, but it’s not odd to compete in the hot climate and a big marathon to take part in. The beauty of the desert filed with a few 1200 runners competing in the ultramarathon. It’s an exciting book which is distinct, and shares a number of information, insight about various topics and still holds the central event of ultra marathon.

Marcel describes the conditions which a runner encounters in the Sahara Desert and the spirit to run the marathon with positive energy, pushing one to its limits, while taking all the needed safeguards. The big and small details that a runner would require are distinctly mentioned inside the book. He has also included his experiences from previous races and mentioned that it appears to be an absurd thing to go on running in a desert, but to the runner it does not appears so.

I loved the fact that the author had mentioned so many details that a runner will benefit from and also as a non-runner the readers will be acquainted with that information. I also appreciated the experiences the writer had cited that will undoubtedly contribute to an athlete in running. What I didn’t admire about the book were some unnecessary trivia that would not add to the running experience. The book had no noticeable errors, and it was an uninterrupted reading experience.

I give this book 3 out of 4 stars. I take away the one star as I didn’t like the trivial information mentioned, and it’s the only aspect that I dislike about the book. I would highly recommend this book to the runners who’ve started on their running journey, to the athletes looking for a book about testing the human strength, and to the lovers of non-fiction.
