Official Review: WIN the WAR on COVID-19 by Scott W Milne
With a resurgence of Covid-19 cases across Europe as well as Donald Trump himself testing positive for the disease, Scott W Milne’s WIN the WAR on COVID-19 couldn’t have been better timed. This book is an essential read for anyone who takes the virus seriously and who wishes to take more proactive action to protect themselves and those around them from catching it. Small to medium-sized business owners, in particular, will find this book very useful – even if they themselves are a bit sceptical about the seriousness of the virus, there are definitely customers out there who are concerned about it.
The book is incredibly detailed and informative, covering a range of subjects from the US’s failure to respond appropriately all the way to both existing and nascent technologies that, while not yet proven to definitively work against SARS-CoV-2, will still sanitise and keep your surroundings clean of dust motes and other nasty airborne particles. While this book is slightly US-centric, Milne does mention other countries’ strategies for containing the virus, and the guidelines given for different segments of society, such as the hospitality sector and educational institutions, are applicable regardless of borders. In addition, the author also poses some very thoughtful questions about the trade-offs between public health safety and privacy.
Milne is no medical professional, but don’t let this fool you. It’s actually one of the main appeals of this book: it skips past the technical jargon of biological terms about the effects of Covid-19 on the body (usually seen in many of the books on this subject), and it concentrates instead on the variety of methods used to keep one protected from catching the virus (as they say, prevention is better than cure!). There’s also ample explanation of the chemistry involved behind the different sanitation methods, such as UV – it’s not technical enough to make one completely confused, and anyone with a basic knowledge of high school chemistry should be able to understand the clear explanations. Underlying all the sound scientific arguments, however, is the advice to always seek professional expertise before implementing any of the methods described. This book fully acknowledges that it’s merely an introduction to the different methods available to keep your surroundings clean, and in my opinion, the encouragement to always do your own due diligence with other external sources is what makes this book truly outstanding.
I can’t think of a single thing I disliked about this book except for a couple of errors that I found, which weren’t enough to disrupt my reading flow. The author cites his sources – albeit not in APA format; he just puts a link in the footnotes for further reading, which may irritate people who are particular about citing sources in the correct fashion. In addition, the author's overt political bias may also put off some readers of a particular political inclination. Nevertheless, all of the information is delivered with the author’s dry, slightly scathing style of writing – which is another point that I really liked about the book.
I see no reason to rate this book anything less than 4 out of 4 stars. It’s compact, it’s informative yet entertaining, but most importantly, it gets the job done – which is what really matters at the end of the day.
