Official Review: Jokes Illustrated by Marvin Maupin
Jokes Illustrated, by Marvin Maupin, can easily brighten your day with its collection of humorous cartoons and jokes. What started as a monthly publication called “Cup O’ Cheer”, a 12-page full color booklet, is now a 133-page book filled with clean jokes ranging from airlines to the workplace.
Divided into various categories arranged from A to W, all of the sections depict each joke with illustrations of cartoon characters. Some of the categories are titled blooper classics, blondes, cowboys, parenting, redneck, or work/office. Under the Christmas section, one joke reads: "Billy was not happy when he opened the box of batteries with a note saying: ‘Toys Not Included’.". In another section titled ‘Marriages’, one joke states: "Why do black widow spiders kill their males after mating? To stop the snoring before it starts".
Bright and colorful, the drawings added a nice touch to each page. Some jokes are depicted as dialogues between characters or as short paragraphs with the punchline at the end. Moreover, there is a page filled with comical puns, while other pages are filled with hilarious oneliners and funny quotes. One of my favorites quotes from the book is: “Some people brighten a room when they enter...others when they leave”. Some of the quotes are also from famous figures like Abe Lincoln and Robert Frost, but most are anonymous. There are also quotes that I found to be very amusing. For example, under quotes from medical records, it states: “ Discharge status: Alive but without permission”.
One of the things that I like about this book is that you can easily stop and start at any page. Since the book is categorized into sections, you can flip to the table of contents and pick out the portion that you want to read. It is set up like the cartoon section of a newspaper, so it is simple enough to follow along. This book is definitely for all ages, and all of the jokes are clean, so parents don’t have to worry about filtering the content.
Overall, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I thoroughly enjoyed flipping through the pages and reading through all the jokes. There was nothing that I did not like about the book. Also, I did not come across any grammatical errors or spelling mistakes. I would recommend this book to anyone who needs a good laugh because this book is enjoyable to read.
