The Spirit of Want by William H Coles, is a three-part story of intrigue, greed and romance.
Luke Osborne, a MD in the “eye business” joins the newly opened Eye Institute; a creation of A.J. MacMiel, who believes that all problems can be solved, regardless of the methods used.
AJ’s adopted daughter Lucy MacMiel, was driving, with Luke as the passenger, when they were involved in an unfortunate car accident. To keep Lucy out of jail, she marries Luke, who sadly does so for love. The cracks are apparent even on their honeymoon and the birth of their daughter, Jennifer, does nothing to help plaster them closed.
Lucy is a self-centered, inconsiderate, high-powered defense attorney who believes everyone has a right to defense. However, she loses the case against a suspected child offender, the Rev Hower Bain of the Apostolic Church of Christ, North Georgia. When the facts come to light that she had been having an affair with the Reverend prior and during the trail, she not only loses her job, but is disbarred as well. Lucy follows Bain to Ghana when he skips the USA, leaving her husband and daughter with hardly a second thought.
Elizabeth MacMiel is AJ’s and Agnes’ natural daughter; who loves children and has devoted herself to teaching third and fourth graders. From an early age, Agnes and Elizabeth are only too happy to help Luke with the care and upbringing of Jennifer, whom they dote on.
That is just the taster. There are so many twists and turns to this story – thank goodness for the character captions at the start of each chapter. Just when you think you know what is going to happen, you get proven wrong – again.
Each character has a strong personality in their different fields; all of which have been researched and portrayed in an interesting manner. Some you love and others you positively loathe due to their attitude to the people in their lives.
The author, William H Coles, is an ophthalmic surgeon, thus his dialogues pertaining to the Eye Institute are all realistic. But, even those who do not have a medical background, are able to follow the story line with ease.
The story is intriguing from the first page, with very little padding. The author has a good command of the English language, as the many prizes and awards that he has won will attest to. He has made the effort to be tutored by various other authors, and all this hard work has resulted in a very professionally written story. In addition, it has been proofread by the best and there are no errors to my knowledge.
I can honestly recommend this book to any reader who enjoys going on a journey; of exploring the lives of various people and the places that they work and live in. This is suited to the more serious reader as you will have to keep your wits about you to keep track of what’s happening. I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars a I truly enjoyed every page of this book.
