The Letter is a fictional novel by Eileen Hare-Scott. This is a book I find very hard to classify. It offers love and romance, crime, rape, sexual abuse, suicide, murder, gambling, blackmail, and lot more. Any lover of a good fictional novel with a lot of drama will enjoy this book. Therefore, I recommend it to them.

Kathleen lost her second husband, Matthew, to a heart attack. Matthew treated his stepdaughter Annabel with love and attention. Annabel grew up and became manipulative to get things she wants from him. She is now used to an extravagant life due to Matthews pampering. Now, after Matthew’s death, Kathleen and Annabel were left almost penniless with no genuine explanation except an envelope with a letter in it. This letter did not provide enough explanation but only gave them doubt and bitterness towards each other and even towards Matthew. What is the content of this letter?

Kathleen was left stranded with no one to turn to as she became a domestic servant for the Peterson. Annabel’s education was well provided for with the education trust fund left by Matthew. Annabel went back to school with a hatred of her mother, leaving her and everything else out of her life. She is now desperate to get a life of luxury and also belong in the society.

Annabel’s search for luxury led her into an unexpected and dangerous situation. Will she get that life of luxury? Will she survive in this situation? What will become of Annabel and her mother? There is a letter that can save her from this dangerous situation. Who wrote this letter and why?

The characters provided in this book are interesting, fun and relatable. The characters like Kathleen and Annabel grow continuously as the story progressed. Each character was provided with enough details to allow readers to flow along with the storyline. Kathleen is my favourite character in this novel. She is a strong woman, who did not allow her situation to see the worst of her. Despite her experience, condition, and heartbreak, she did not give up on love and life.

The storyline was one that flows well. It features so many subplots like the love life of Dave Mannix and Sally, Michael and Dorothy and lot more. All these subplots were fused together to make the storyline lovely and suspenseful. The storyline also involves the life of crime and drug smuggling of Edward and his crew.

I really enjoyed reading this book as the author did justice to it, from the beginning to the end. The ending was lovely as details were provided to reveal the mysteries at the beginning of the book.

I found no fault in this book. Therefore, I rate The Letter 4 out of 4 stars.

Lives are always turned upside down when a breadwinner dies. Although Kathleen was the most hard-hit by her husband's death, It's a relief that Annabel could continue with her education. The letter addressed to the two women elevates the family drama to greater heights.

I like books that contains themes found in different genres. And this one seems to offer all the themes I like to read about, especially the ones of romance, murder and gambling. It seems like luxury comes with a high price for Annabel. Enchanting review!
