Fables, vol 1: Legends in Exile, by Bill Willingham

Post by Gravy »

This graphic novel brings out all the fabled characters and creatures. Snow White is Deputy Mayor of Fabletown, the secret community of legendary icons forced to leave their homelands by "The Adversary".

The big bad wolf (Bigby) is the shariff, and, yes, there's even the three little pigs, though they're forced to live on the farm. Can't have the mundies learning that fables are real.
Even Oz's flying monkeys make appearences, carrying books to and fro.

But the actual story is a mystery, Snow White's sister, Rose Red, has gone missing, is possibly dead, and it's up to Bigby and Snow to find out what happened.

Overall a fun read though, despite the disneyesque characters, this is really for mature readers. Mainly for a sprinkling of F-bombs and a solitary adult situation. I rated it a three out of four, and recommend it to anyone who enjoys urban fantasy :tiphat:

I really enjoyed Fables, vol 1. It's fun to see all the fairy tale characters I grew up with trying to be regular people in the real world. It's a fun take a the traditional fairy tales and the following volumes brings richer and more dynamic character. Love the art, Love Bigby. Really just loved it all.

I have played the game and enjoyed it. I never realized that there was a comic that it was based off of. I'll have to check it out.

The illustration style in Fables, Vol. 1 is right up my alley. The storytelling was good as well. So often it's one or the other, but Vertigo got them both right in Fables.

I truly enjoyed this graphic novel. I thought it was the prefect blend of fairytale stories and movie/ book characters I’ve ever read. Willingham is great author. The book is easy to read and quite enjoyable.

I love Fables! Did you know it had the chance at a tv show? Once Upon a Time won out over it on ABC. I can say I'm sad it didn't make the cut, but I also don't think ABC wouldn't have done it justice.

Late to the party with this thread, but I would thoroughly recommend Fables to anyone, it has a healthy long run of 150 issues and covers such a wide variety of interesting characters and storylines. @slj3988 as of now at least, I believe we're finally getting a sequel to The Wolf Among Us sometime soon...ish?
