What did you think about Cody? Did you think him honorable? He wanted to take Suzanne to his chief because of some warped up sense of honor, although he knew the chief abused white women. I understood his conflict in a way, but thought it was wrong of him even to consider it.

Also, what did you think about the way he treated Lame Bird, the Indian woman?

I thought this was crazy since Cody knew the chief abused women. Sure, the sense of honor was ingrained in his due to his culture. However, Cody was very protective of Suzanne and had romantic feelings for her. I could not relate at all to him considering her to the chief.

I agree. I couldn't understand it either.

I read this book a while ago. Looking back on it now, I really appreciate Cody's consideration of sentencing Suzanne to such a terrible fate. It's a cool literary device, in my opinion, because as readers from a modern culture we think it would be so horrible and in that way makes Cody into less of a hero. However, Cody is considering doing it because it is honorable (or so he believes). I like conflicted characters who do not fall into binary 'good guy' and 'bad guy' categories.

I agree that Cody was a well-developed character. Although even considering throwing Suzanne "to the wolves" was horrible, it fit well within the culture and time period.

I still wouldn't want to be stuck with Cody. Even if he loved me, I would always wonder if he would turn me over to someone who would abuse and kill me!

I agree with Scott, Cody considered it because it would be the honourable choice and that haters these days will go to extreme legnths to make a hero look like a villain.

I have a confession to make. I didn't like the fact that Cody wanted to give her to the chief. But Cody is a man of honor, even if the majority of people in his tribe consider him a "sell-out". He was always trying to do the right thing.

The duty he had towards his honor was higher compared to his feelings at that point. I agree with bookowlie, trust is difficult to regain after such experience...

Cody wasn't so much my kind of guy (we all know I like shy, nerdy guys with glasses) and his tough-guy front just wasn't for me. However, I did kind of feel like he was right for Suzanne. He had issues, but he is a man, so that can't be helped.

Though I hated the idea that Cody wanted to give Suzanne to the chief, I understand that he thought it was the right thing to do at the time. What he did for Suzanne after that made me like him much. I would rather have a guy who initially thought of betraying me but changed his mind and did everything to save me than a guy who saved me first then left me on my own afterwards. If I were stuck at the wrong place at the wrong time, I would be happy to meet another Cody

I think that the author tried to make Cody a complex character, but ended up making him really confusing. Because his feelings toward Suzanne don't coincide with his desire to introduce her to a potential threat. It really doesn't add up

I personally did not like the guy. I don't care how much you care about someone, you're no better than the abusive scum if you know about it and get "conflicted" about it (or whateever you'd call it), because of your retarded "sense of honor." Let's just say I'm glad I never lived in that era or was ever Suzanne. Cody was my second least favorite character. Which is weird since it seemed like we were supposed to "fall in love" with him along with Suzanne.
