“For the past five years or so, I have helped co-judge an annual journalism competition related to human rights.”
I also love how he humanizes the people of Congo. It’s easy for us to see them just as he quoted, but his goal is to show there is more to these people than killing and war:
“Killing each other—is that all you think we’ve done, other than die of Ebola? We also are a country of dreamers, artists, musicians, and other creators, and you can start with my precious family."
Great interview! I’m glad I read this.

- Signature Addition: View official OnlineBookClub.org review of Drone Child
Greetings, everyone! I'm dropping the price of Drone Child to just 99 cents through July 31, 2022, to encourage people to buy and review it.
I'm touched by all the praise for the book--inspired by Everydayadventure15's insightful 4/4 review, the sample chapter at the Drone Child web site mentioned in the interview, and my comments during the memorable Q&A with kandscreeley. Drone Child isn't the usual war novel. It focuses more on relationships and moral issues than on weapons details and strategies.
I've especially cherished the enthusiasm of African OBC members who appreciate my research for the book. Africa is more than 50 different countries. But I'd hope that the fact-checking about the Democratic Republic of the Congo was obvious even if, say, you lived in Nigeria or South Africa instead.
Now here's a chance to enjoy the whole novel for yourself for just 99 cents and encourage me to write other books of possible interest to you. Maybe even arrange for professional French and Lingala translations, as my Congolese fact-checkers are hoping?
If you also can spread the word through reviews and forum postings on Amazon or other sites, that will be even more helpful.
I can't keep the price at 99 cents forever because of the money I spent to research Drone Child, but I figured that budget-minded people in Africa and elsewhere outside the US would particularly like the discount.
Thanks!
David H. Rothman
P.S. Contact OBC Support if you have trouble buying the book. The full title, by the way, is Drone Child: A Novel of War, Family, and Survival.
