1. What do you do when you aren't writing?
I enjoy cooking and reading. And I'm always writing in my gratitude journal, and hot yoga has become my thing.
2. Who's been most influential in your life?
My parents, without a doubt, and my mother specifically. She was a brilliant PhD ethnomusicologist, classically trained pianist, educator and church organist for 50 years. Her life of service to her students and the community was so visible to me.
3. Let's discuss your book Wellness on the Weekly. Why did you decide to write a book about wellness activities?
Mindfulness practices pulled me out of serious grief after we lost my WWII father in 2021. He was 95 and the king of our household and ruled our hearts. We were devastated. I was pulling my hair out and had a horrible rash. Daily multiple yoga practices were life-saving, as were journaling, breathing, and walking. I want to help others and make it fun and accessible.
4. How did you go about writing the book? How long did it take?
I gave myself the deadline of getting the book into my mother's hands while she could enjoy it. She always encouraged me to write a book. She had, so why couldn't I? I manifested the book, it seems, and don't know how I did it. The dedication is a love letter to my mother. She died about 6 weeks after receiving my book.
5. Who is your target audience? Are you aiming at those who are fit or those who are just starting?
As long as your doctor says you can move and breathe, there is no level of fitness required to try the different mindfulness practices. All of the yoga practices can be adapted, and if you can't walk, invite someone to go outside with you in a wheelchair or other mobility device. Being in the present is the most important.
6. What makes your book different from other exercise or wellness books?
It's not an exercise book, and I include the science behind the practice, a bit about my journey when appropriate and inject a whole lot of variety, fun and encouragement. There is no pressure or end goal. If a reader finds one practice they would do again, they've won!
7. What did you learn while writing the book?
Mindfulness is a journey and requires practice. It's not a destination.
8. What's next for you? Any future books in the works?
Mindfulness on the Weekly Companion: For Anyone Who Wants to Boost Their Superpowers was released in May 2025 and is a digital-only version of 16 practices covering 12 mindfulness modalities. Its idea is to have on the go, to try new things, and to build out what one already likes. May should also be when Mindful and Mobilized - The Digital Wellness Guide for Political Activists will be released. It is designed for before, during and after a day of action. I even have a novel coming out next year, The Disappointed Wives Club: A Journey Of Healing Through Friendship and Mindfulness. It's based on a true story.
I like to end with fun questions.
9. What's your favorite exercise?
Gentle yoga.
10. If you had a million dollars, how would you spend it?
Purchase a small house in Crete steps from the ocean.
11. What's your favorite thing about yourself?
My empathy.
12. What do you do in order to get motivated?
Think of how many people I can help.
