I assess poetry on how it makes me feel and think. If its a poem that deeply moves me, then I know it'll have that effect on someone else. If its a poem that makes me think, I know that it is well written. Basically, I assess poems based on how I feel after reading them.

I am a lover of poem. I consider one to be good for me if it rings a bell, if it reminds me of someone or something and if it brings me to another dimension. It is excellent if it penetrates my soul like the song of an angel.

Poetry, like music, is subjective.

One of the things I remember most from my poetry classes is that "no two people read the same poem." Readers bring their own experience, interpretations, etc. to the poem. Some people prefer form, other people don't "get" free verse.

For me, I like poetry that moves me, poems that I feel speak to me regardless of form.

I think that you can appreciate poetry by being able to visualize what the author is talking about. For me, I can't understand Shakespeare's poetry because of the language that he uses. Rap is a form of poetry just connected to a beat. Poems come in all lengths and topics, but it's about what connects with you. :)

All poems other than nonsensical poems carry within them the poets thoughts. When you read a poem without actually getting his thoughts-poet's, will land you into such problems as not being able to appreciate any poem.

Poetry is a very broad term. There are many types of poem from free verse to prose poetry. I write and read poetry very frequently. I guess that poetry is there to provoke thought, to inspire the reader to accept a mindset or at least understand the persona a little better. My favourite poems are those that are really personal where the persona is testifying and simply revealing little pockets of wisdom or emotionally gripping info.

As long a you love it there's no need dealing on how you will appreciate it. But of course we're all different when it comes to opinions, point of views and styles. So appreciating a poems depends on what kind of a person, what's in the heart and specially what he/she really likes, cause like stories there's a lot of kind of poems (love, romantic, struggles in life etc).
For me, Poems is a strong feeling felt by the author and written with passionate rhymes and methapors.
Thats what I really love in writing poems, I can really express my feelings and put it into words. I can feel the poems message and heart felt emotions when I read them.
I love poems ❤❤❤
Thank you guys. I wish I have given some ideas.

You have to be patient when reading a poem and read to the end. The meaning could be at the end.

High school made me me appreciate poetry... One just has to focus and have the patience to see the poet's point of view. I love how a lot can be said in a few words

I always felt poetry should be heard. I like to read aloud when I read poetry. When I write poetry, I never know if it really works until I read it aloud a few times to see how it sounds. It doesn't always sound the same aloud as it does in my head.
