My favorite poem is "A freedom song" by Marjorie Oludhe Macgoye. It tells the story of an African girl known as Atieno. She is taken by the uncle and made a slave in his home. The girl gets pregnant and dies of post-partum depression. The uncle gives her a lavish burial just for the show and she is soon replaced by another girl. It depicts the real life of most African girls from poor backgrounds.

"Atieno’s had a baby
So we know that she is bad.
Fifty fifty it may live
And repeat the life she had
Ending in post-partum bleeding,
Atieno yo."

Hard to call between "The Man From Snowy River" by Banjo Patterson, "The Rubaiyat" by Omar Khayyam, and "The Wasteland" by TS Eliot.

"I think I should have loved you presently" by Edna St. Vincent Millay is my favorite. Its basically the story of lost opportunity and it is so well written that I have been reading it almost daily.

One of my favourite poems is O Captain! My Captain! by Walt Whitman. I truly love the stark contrast down in the poem and also the idea of pain and happiness going hand in hand.

Dreams. By Langston Hughes

Hold fast to dreams
For if dreams die
Like is a broken winged bird
That cannot fly
Hold fast to dreams
For when dreams go
Life is a barren field
Frozen with snow

My favorite poem is “We never know how high we are” by Emily Dickinson.
This poem is short but has a lot of truth in it. It is focused on how we all set standard for ourselves and never think we can do more and be more. When we have the chance to do so, we are scared to be more than our standards.

I don't have one favorite, but today the poem my heart is reciting is "Song of Myself." I've been working 12-14 hour days all week, and today is my last big push before I work only 8 hours tomorrow and then have two days off. I'm pushing hard, and I cant help but think that I am sounding my barbaric YAWP as I get through this week.
