April's Poetry Month

Post by Scott »

Someone told me that April is poetry month. Is that true? How long has it been poetry month?

If so, what are you doing for poetry month? Anything special?

Oh, another quick idea, why not have a poetry contest? i think more people would participate in that contest.

Apparently it is, according to the website link above,
Not in the UK 'though. We have a National Poetry day in October (on Oct. 4th his year).

Have a bit of T.S.Eliot's The Waste Land to celebtate your Poetry Month:

April is the cruellest month, breeding
Lilacs out of the dead land, mixing
Memory and desire, stirring
Dull roots with spring rain.
Winter kept us warm, covering
Earth in forgetful snow, feeding
A little life with dried tubers.
Summer surprised us, coming over the Starnbergersee
With a shower of rain; we stopped in the colonnade,
And went on in sunlight, into the Hofgarten,
And drank coffee, and talked for an hour.
Or better still, a bit of Browning!
Oh, to be in England
Now that April's there,
And whoever wakes in England
Sees, some morning, unaware,
That the lowest boughs and the brushwood sheaf
Round the elm-tree bole are in tiny leaf,
While the chaffinch sings on the orchard bough
In England - now!

A poetry contest would be great as well. I am a huge T.S. Eliot fan as well. My favorite is The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock. I memorized it in college and quote it to students to get them interested.

April is National Poetry month in America, but I am not sure whether it is also in Canada and Australasia. I have written a lot of poetry (especially the last year) and I highlighted National Poetry Month on my website, and I get visitors from all over the world, so I guess that each country will now look on April as National Poetry month. I hope so. (For me, a compulsive poet, every month is national poetry month, ha ha).

April is national poetry month, also known as NaPoWriMo (national poetry writing month) or GloPoWriMo (global poetry writing month).
Some people choose to just read more poetry this month or learn more about poets. Others write poetry this month.
I myself follow two different blogs that post daily prompts during April and I write a poem a day.

I choose to write more this month, ie one or two poems a day.

My latest is:

KING OF THE NIGHT - By Josie Whitehead

King of the Night, ruling alone,
Ensconced upon your astral throne,
With starry servants, shining bright,
You chaperone us through the night.

Unlike the sun, with burnished beams,
Your silvery shaft now gently streams,
Awakening creatures of the night
Who, during day, may shrink from sight.

King of the Night, with fingers cool,
Embracing meadow, village pool;
You safeguard humans as we dream
With lustrous lights that gently beam.

Nice. I like the flow and the instances of alliteration. The imagery is well done, too.

Christina - Thank you so much. It is written in iambic tetrameter which I think suits this subject. I've written about the moon and the sun many times (see my website), but I always think of the moon and sun as "she". My poem "Lady Sun and Lady Moon" highlights this with the two sisters who just occasionally meet, and so I thought I would like to change the subject to male this time. Thanks for your review. Josie
