I recently watched a movie, Love Beats Rhymes, where this was the bone of contention. The movie sought to differentiate between rap and poetry but, in my opinion, rap is poetry. Just look at spoken word poetry, it sounds a lot like rap to me.

I don't think all rap is poetic but I do feel the lyrical nature of the genre would qualify it as poetry. Of course, some rap songs are more profound than others...lol

I definitely think that rap is poetry. In fact I would also say, that the lyrics, of any kind of music, are poetry. My 7th grade English teacher showed us that the lyrics of Bob Dylan's songs were as good as any poem.

When I have listened to rap, I was impressed by its poetic qualities. Like all types of art, practitioners vary in abilities.

I believe that rap is poetry. I think the process of writing it is the same wherein the emotions of the writer/artist is put on page. Perhaps some poetry can also be given a beat and be rapped.

Yes, I think that rap is poetry. I don't like all rap songs, but I don't like all poetry, either. I am usually a classic rock girl, so I don't listen to a lot of rap. However, I think that Eminem is a genius. He is a wordsmith combining wit and wisdom in his rhymes.

Good rap...the real, genuine lyrical stuff, is 100% poetry. It’s complex, interesting, and clever. It can contain double and triple meanings, metaphors, similes, unusual rhyming schemes, and all kinds of different topics. It’s really smart stuff, I love rap/hip hop.

Eminem’s wordplay & rhyming is just insane. He thinks of stuff no one else could, truly one of the greats in the game! A lot of people think it’s just bad language, sex & violence but if you dig a little deeper and keep an open mind there’s so much more to it than that.

I’ve always seen rap as poetry, just with beats and such. However not all of them are enjoyable to listen to (in my opinion).

Rap is poetry infused with beats and instrumentals. Melodies cuddling with figures of speech to deliver message into the ears. Oh yeah! How special is that poetry?

I consider rap as a revised and remixed version of poetry. Poetry is soothing and peaceful and on the other hand, rap is a party type.

I absolutely believe rap is poetry. The word 'RAP' stands to represent Rythm And Poetry. That is to say, its practically impossible to separate poetry from rap. Besides both RAP and Poetry have to do with the delivery of words.

100 percent, rap is poetry! I think most music, the lyrics could be considered poetry but especially rap. It’s another form of spoken word that just happens to have music added. Many might not agree with this, but I especially think Eminem is a poet, his way with words is incredible. Poetry to me is just words formatted in a different way to create emotion and that’s also a great definition for lyrics
