This is the place for readers of poetry. Discuss poetry and literary art. You can also discuss music here, including lyrics. Also, you can discuss poets themselves, in addition to poetry.

Ryan Tedder is fantastic! Most people know him from One Republic, whose lyrics are fantastic to begin with, but he also writes for other artists like Beyoncé and Adele!

I'd have to say Taylor Swift is one of the best out there. FYI, she wrote her third studio album (Speak Now) all by herself. Poor media portrayal is just too strong that is why most people overlook her songwriting skills.

If Taylor Swift isn't on this list then something is very wrong. She's been writing her own music since before she released her debut album (which she did at sixteen!) and every song she has ever released has either been written or co-written by her. She wrote her entire third album, Speak Now, by herself and in my mind, it includes some of the best lyrics ever written. If you're looking for music with good lyrics, I recommend to listen to all of her music, specifically All Too Well, Sad Beautiful Tragic, Dear John, Last Kiss, Soon You'll Get Better, Out of the Woods, You Are in Love, White Horse, and Enchanted. Truly, Taylor just writes poetry to music.

I also love NF and the lyrics he has written but also Niall Horan has created deeply well thought out lyrics.

When I think of the greatest lyrics Damian Marley come to my mind. It takes critical thinking to understand the lyrics.
The sample from the song titled Patience
We born not knowing, are we born knowing all ?
We growing wiser, are we just growing tall ?
Can you read thoughts, can you read palms?
Can you predict the future, can you see storms coming?

I think Kendrick Lamar is the best lyricist at the moment.

“To the Bone”- Pamungkas

Take me home, I'm fallin'
Love me long, I'm rollin'
Losing control, body and soul
Mind too for sure, I'm already yours
Walk you down, I'm all in
Hold you tight, you call and
I'll take control your body and soul
Mind too for sure, I'm already yours

"Angel Like You- Miley Cyrus

I know that you're wrong for me
Gonna wish we never met on the day I leave
I brought you down to your knees
'Cause they say that misery loves company
It's not your fault I ruin everything
And it's not your fault I can't be what you need
Baby, angels like you can't fly down here with me
I'm everything they said I would be

annareads wrote: 08 Aug 2014, 12:06 For me, Alex Turner of Arctic Monkeys and Mikel Jollett of Airborne Toxic Event are two of the greatest lyricists of this generation. Al has so many pointed lines and fantastically snappy songs, and Mikel creates gorgeous scenes and storylines.

Some examples of Al: "You look like you've been for breakfast at the Heartbreak Hotel." "I've tried to ask you this in some daydreams that I've had but you're always busy being make-believe." "Somebody told the stars you're not coming out tonight, so they found a place to hide."

For Mikel, I'd recommend listening to Sometime Around Midnight, Elizabeth, and Neda.

I love these guys, but I'm always looking for artists with incredible lyrics. Who are your favorites?
I choose Omah Lay too. His lyrics are sociological
"I am learning every day to allow the space between where I am and where I want to be to inspire me and not terrify me."

I'd like to mention BTS. Just listen to their music and consider the meaning of their lyrics. In my opinion, it is simply incomparable.
