I'd have to say Taylor Swift is one of the best out there. FYI, she wrote her third studio album (Speak Now) all by herself. Poor media portrayal is just too strong that is why most people overlook her songwriting skills.

If Taylor Swift isn't on this list then something is very wrong. She's been writing her own music since before she released her debut album (which she did at sixteen!) and every song she has ever released has either been written or co-written by her. She wrote her entire third album, Speak Now, by herself and in my mind, it includes some of the best lyrics ever written. If you're looking for music with good lyrics, I recommend to listen to all of her music, specifically All Too Well, Sad Beautiful Tragic, Dear John, Last Kiss, Soon You'll Get Better, Out of the Woods, You Are in Love, White Horse, and Enchanted. Truly, Taylor just writes poetry to music.

For me, Alex Turner of Arctic Monkeys and Mikel Jollett of Airborne Toxic Event are two of the greatest lyricists of this generation. Al has so many pointed lines and fantastically snappy songs, and Mikel creates gorgeous scenes and storylines.

Some examples of Al: "You look like you've been for breakfast at the Heartbreak Hotel." "I've tried to ask you this in some daydreams that I've had but you're always busy being make-believe." "Somebody told the stars you're not coming out tonight, so they found a place to hide."

For Mikel, I'd recommend listening to Sometime Around Midnight, Elizabeth, and Neda.
