I could name many songs like this but off the top of my head, it would be King Crimson's Epitaph:
"Knowledge is a deadly friend, if no one sets the rules
The fate of all mankind, I see, is in the hands of fools
Confusion willl be my epitaph
As I crawl a cracked and broken path
If we make it, we can all sit back and laugh,
but I feel, tomorrow, I'll be crying
-I hope my minimal punctuation is correct-
Other songs from King Crimson that does this to me to however a lesser degree: one time, moonchild
I find poetry and meaning in their lyrics. Progressive rockers are generally good at this.
Take Roger Waters. Comfortably Numb, Wish You Were Here, Hey You, Echoes, Welcome to the Machine... they have so many almost poetic songs:
"When I was a child
I caught a fleeting glimpse
Out of the corner of my eye
I turned to look but it was gone
I cannot put my finger on it now
The child is grown
The dream is gone
I have become comfortably numb" (copied this one from azlyrics)
Dream Thrum (great song indeed) and Lullaby by the band James "take that child, and teach him senseless... damage the dream, the magic is broken, the house is in ruins, your memory's one sided, this side that you're choosing feels nothing, nothing at all - actually every word in lullaby hits home with me)
I think I'd have an infinite list of songs that does the deed so I'll just stop. I consider these people poets.
