Favorite Poet quote

Post by EReid »

I don't read a lot of poetry, but every once in a while, I'll see a great quote from a poem or a poet. My favorite poet quote is one by Emily Dickinson: "I wish you a kinder sea." It's a creative twist on a common sentiment and it feels so sincere.
What is your favorite poet/poem quote? Why?

Quick aside: I too am reading Dune. Got it for Xmas. Great read.
Favourite quote is from Phillip Larkin's This Be The Verse. They f*ck you up your mum and dad/They may not mean to but they do/They pass on all the faults they had/Then add some extra just for you.
When I taught poetry as an elective to Law Enforcement students the term would invariably open with feet on the table and a general air of disdain for poetry (easy peasy elective, right?) This whole poem would jolt them out of their insouciance and for many, hit home hard. Suddenly poetry had real meaning for their lives.

So many good ones to choose from!

“Failing to fetch me at first, keep encouraged. Missing me one place, search another. I stop somewhere waiting for you.”
- Song of Myself, Walt Whitman
This is from one of my favorite pieces by Whitman. I don't exactly know why I found these lines to be so impactful to me. It could be that I frequently worry about making some kind of mistake that will affect my life negatively. Whitman, a lot of the time, reminds us that life isn't always this unkind thing that aims to destroy us. It can be patient, so you can take your time. I can't tell you how comforting his work has been for me over the years.

I don't know if it would be my favorite, but I find it thought-provoking...

My curse on plays that have to be set up in fifty ways
On the days war with every knave and dolt
I swear before the dawn come round again
I'll find the stable and pull out the bolt

From "The Fascination of What's Difficult"

I feel it when I sorrow most;
‘Tis better to have loved and lost
Than never to have loved at all.”
