Is Shakespeare Poetry?

This is the place for readers of poetry. Discuss poetry and literary art. You can also discuss music here, including lyrics. Also, you can discuss poets themselves, in addition to poetry.

Most of Shakespeare's work is poetry. The plays are mostly in blank pentameter. He has a tendency to drop into prose when he's writing lower class characters, or high class characters slumming.

I believe everything he writes is pure poetry. How can it not be?

Sort of. Shakespeare often uses verse and prose to distinguish between classes. Royalty and noblemen, for example, will usually speak in "blank verse"-- unrhymed iambic pentameter, while lower class characters will speak in prose. (The exceptions to this rule are really fun to discuss). So actually, many of the long speeches are written in verse.

As an answer to the original question: Shakespeare's plays are not poems, but they are poetry.
agreed ^

I would definitely say Shakespeare is poetry. Anything that has to do with words in a rthym is poetry.
for example my most recent poem Breathe:

I breathe in and
Smell raspberries from the corner table.
I hear the hum of the computer and
the talk of television people in
the other room.
I exhale.
The carpet against my fragile cheek stings but
I do nothing to take away the pain I only
Breathe in and
Feel warm blood rush through me and hear
Classical music coming from somewhere above me.
I release.
A spot between my shoulder blades itches and
causes me distress but
I, at this moment, am too lethargic to twist
My arm around at that inhuman angle and
Scratch.
I inhale and
the carpet continues to sting my cheek.
A strand of hair falls into my view;
I slowly and carefully push it back into its rightful place and
Breathe out.
I turn my head so that my other cheek is against the carpet and
Close my eyes and
Take a few deep breaths before
Opening my eyes again. I
Breathe in.
It is a thousand years before I breathe out again and
Still I am never satisfied.

------------------------------------------
there's no rhyme in that poem at all. but it has a flow and a rhythym, anyone can clearly see. so does Shakespeare. That's his poetry.

I guess that is a tough one for me to answer because to me poetry is rhyming which I know is not all the time. In some sense I don't really see poetry in Shakespeare. Now I guess Romeo and Julie's romance can be considered poetry in a sense.

If Shakespeare is not Poetry, I could not imagine any other.

Shakespeare, of course, wrote many plays and other prose.
I think, what is really asked here is: Are compositions without rhyme and meter poems?
"In the beginning was the word.........John 1:1"
...To delineate the times that lovers miss,
...A thousand dreams can't beat a single kiss.

He wrote a couple of sonnets, which is considered poetry. But for other works of art, nah.

Shakespeare's plays and sonnets can be forms of poems, or plays and sonnets. I believe that what makes poetry, poetry is a persons perspective of it. I see Shakespeare's work as poetry, because of how he uses his words. Shakespeare has a wonderful way with the words he chooses.

Yes i do regard Shakespeare as a poet. His sonnets are a treat any poetry lover. I love how he improvised the Petrarchan sonnet adding his own epigrammatic couplet to end it.
