Well do you think all that poetry slam stuff is poetry? I do! And I do also think that Shakespeare wrote poetry. Not everything he wrote is poetry... but yes he wrote poetry!!! "Shall I compare thee to a summers lease" is a marvellous one!

I definitely think so, first because he also wrote sonnets and that's as poetic as can get. But as a playwright, any time there is a chorus in the beginning of a scene or if a character has a soliloquy, I think that's poetry.

Technically I guess Shakespeare could read as poetry, but I always preferred to read his plays as just plays. I was honestly never the biggest fan of Shakespeare, although I did enjoy reading Hamlet for school.

Shakespeare provides profound drama
I wouldn’t say that his work is poetry
All genres in literature intertwine meaning its composition of devises and techniques are similar however Shakespeare’s work should be under the ‘dramatic’ umbrella rather than poetry

well i do consider most of his works as real poetry.if one would for example take one of his plays JULIUS CAESAR,the utterances made by the characters would prove to be poetry.Their dialogue contains the aspect of style that a reader would use to refer it as a poem.such aspects used include, pun, alliteration, repetition among others

He does write poetry such as his Sonnets but Romeo and Juliet is a novel - yes it's lovely and contains beautiful images and sounds- but it's not a poem in my opinion.

Oh absolutely! The iambic pentameter WHILE story telling is unreal. I love his sonnets, too.

I certainly think of Shakespeare as a poet. As other posters have said, his plays are mostly in iambic pentameter. And, as my favorite English professor pointed out, if you read his work to a beat, it sounds like a pretty cool rap lol

Shakespeare wrote both plays and poetry. Have you read his sonnets? There are certainly speeches in his plays which are magnificent and can be read as poetry. Bottom line, I suppose, define poetry - how about words used to conjure up images and emotion which flow rhythmically and are easy to say? English professors don't quote me.

In his plays he included sonnets which are a form of poetry so I guess somenof his works could be considered poetry.

Yes, his work is poetry. It has meter and rhythm, it rhymes, he uses lots of poetic devices, and writes in lines, not sentences/paragraphs. Even his dramas are put together in this way for the most part. If we consider epic poems like Beowulf and the Odyssey poetry, then Shakespeare's works are no less so just because they are long.

Yes, Poetry is literary work in which special intensity is given to the expression of feelings and ideas by the use of distinctive style and rhythm; poems collectively or as a genre of literature. Shakespeare shows so much expressions by the intensity of each character's feelings/emotions, as well as used many different verses that rhyme and verses that had many different meanings behind them than just one meaning alone. He expressed every character's true personality and role through the way each person had talked/communicated to another or other characters, as well as to the readers themselves.
