Maybe inspiration is too strong a word, but there are some poets and some poems I've loved.

Edna St Vincent Millay was my first favorite. As a teenager her poem "Spring" grabbed me in a way no poem had ever done before. I read everything of hers I could find until I tried to read a book of her personel letters. Although I was absolutely fascinated I quit reading it one late night. In tears. Mourning the loss of such a life; mourning my own intrusion in that life.

A more recent love is Billy Collins. I'd overlooked the first few of his I'd read and then happeded upon..."The Parade", I think. I loved it. Then continued to love more. "Statues In The Park" I believe, is the title of another great one. And "The Country".)

I've loved Arnold's "Dover Beach", Dylans "Fern Hill", Marques's "The Lesson Of The Moth", Milosc's(sp?) "Encounter", Oliver's "The Grasshopper", Owen's "Dulce Et Decorum Est"(sp?).... I'm sure I've left so many out.

I would have to say Banjo Patterson because his style takes me to a far off place that I can see and relate to

definitely ee cummings. his deconstruction of text was something I "inherited" so to speak. I love using words to literally make pictures.

I have always been fond of Leonard Cohen, Robert Frost, and Shel Silverstein. Also dozens of musicians who have used poetry in their songs. It is hard for me to define what catches me, but first and foremost, I would have to say clarity of word use. I hate getting tangled up in words trying to figure out what the point is.

Robert Frost: "the road not taken". Beautifully melancholic don't you think? :)

Latest Review: "Chains of Mist" by T.C. Metivier

I would agree that inspiration may be too strong a word but my favourite poets (if you can have favourites) would be Sylvia Plath and Vizma Belsevica. I know a lot of people hate plath but I don't really see why. She puts her life and emotions onto paper as therapy and her language choice is often exquisite. As for Belsevica, her poetry has brilliant metaphors for her country's occupation. It is a shame more foreign poets are not studied in schools.

Mary Oliver has influenced me most. I own 4 of her books, and I'm considering giving copies of her newest one to certain family members for Christmas. Only my favorites, of course. :)
