Thanks Gannon - I must say I always like to see what you are currently reading too. Us Aussies need to stick together, hey. :D

Thanks Fran - I am always on the lookout for your recommendations too. For the most part, we seem to have similar tastes for quality literature. :tiphat:

Ah, DATo, you continue to crack me up! :lol2: I think that letter from the Aussie soldier in boot camp just may well have been my grandmother!

The convict connection in Australia can be a touchy point. Many Aussies tracing their family tree get excited these days to find a convict connection. But I'm SOUTH Australian, and our colony was founded by free settlers, unlike most other states. However, I did find out that my great great grandfather, who came to South Australia from England in 1850, had spent 12 months in jail as a lad for destroying some farming equipment. :o
So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.

I know this is a super belated post, but I really enjoyed reading all the comments here. DATo, I hope you don't mind my using your army story about Sheila. It's a classic! Who is it from, by the way?

Thanks, everyone, for all the fun!

P.S. I do know a lot of Aussies, but they are all transplants from the Philippines. I was in Sydney for a spell decades ago. I would love to be back.
