List of questions in a list in a sentence.

Post by lbhatters »

Hi. I am in the process of writing a review. I have a sentence that includes a list of questions. I don't think proper grammar would require a a comma after each question. In fact the consensus seems to be that the question mark is used in place of the comma. I am using APA style. Does APA follow this rule? I need confirmation. Here is the sentence: "(Author name) answers some of the most difficult life questions of ontology plaguing mankind from birth by examining the revelations in scripture, such as, why did God create the world? where are we now in history of the world? and, what can I expect in the future?" Thank you!

Here's a discussion about punctuating a sentence featuring a list of questions. https://english.stackexchange.com/quest ... e-sentence

And this one (under Question Flurry). https://www.quickanddirtytips.com/educa ... -questions

From my quick perusal of these two sites, I'd say the general consensus is that the sentence should be formatted as such:

"(Author name) answers some of the most difficult life questions of ontology plaguing mankind from birth by examining the revelations in scripture such as: Why did God create the world? Where are we now in history of the world? What can I expect in the future?"

There shouldn't be commas after the question marks, and since each question is a full sentence, the first letter of each should be capitalized. I also wouldn't include "and" before the last sentence.

If I'm incorrect, someone feel free to correct me. I'd hate to give out false information and misguide someone.

Though I am not an expert, I think this is right. This is how I would write it if I were to do the review.
