Gun-slinging or Gunslinging?

Some grammar rules (and embarrassing mistakes!) transcend the uniqueness of different regions and style guides. Gun-slinging or Gunslinging?

Merriam-Webster dictionary defines gunslinging as a noun. There is no hyphen (Gun-slinging) as instructed by my editor. Any thoughts? I lost points on this. thank you!
