Commas and Coordinating Conjunctions (Full Guide with Examples and Sources)

Some grammar rules (and embarrassing mistakes!) transcend the uniqueness of different regions and style guides. This new International Grammar section by OnlineBookClub.org ultimately identifies those rules thus providing a simple, flexible rule-set, respecting the differences between regions and style guides. You can feel free to ask general questions about spelling and grammar. You can also provide example sentences for other members to proofread and inform you of any grammar mistakes.

Thank you for the notes. I did always make mistakes in putting commas in appropriate place. It really helps me a lot.

@Scott, does it mean that because of the subjectivity of what may be viewed as long or short when connecting two independent clauses, a comma is needed but it isn't wrong not to include it? I noticed you only gave an example with and and but. Does this apply to the other conjunctions as well?

Scott,
Thanks for this compact review. I'll study and memorize it. I'm sure my score will go up as a result.

A question regarding comma use: I have seen several instances where an author would write something similar to:

He packed a bow, a sling of arrows and a hunting knife.

They put the comma after bow, but not after arrows. Is that correct or incorrect?

Thanks a lot! However, I believe authors are still free to use commas and other punctuation marks wherever they want it to denote a pause... but it's rather complicated to distinguish it out of characters' speech.
