Which way would you write this sentence?

Some grammar rules (and embarrassing mistakes!) transcend the uniqueness of different regions and style guides. This new International Grammar section by OnlineBookClub.org ultimately identifies those rules thus providing a simple, flexible rule-set, respecting the differences between regions and style guides. You can feel free to ask general questions about spelling and grammar. You can also provide example sentences for other members to proofread and inform you of any grammar mistakes.

Which way would you write this sentence? Which is grammatically correct?

1.) This was not the first encounter John had found himself in with members connected to the mob – and it certainly would not be his last.

2.) This was not the first encounter John had found himself in, with members connected to the mob, and it certainly would not be his last.

I see I'm in the minority, but I would go with the first sentence. The phrase "with members connected to the mob" qualifies "encounter" and thus does not need to be set off by commas. It could be placed right after "encounter" too.

I believe both are acceptable as well. I do like the first one better though.

The first sentence would be the best option. The comma provides an unnecessary break in the statement.

Intuitively, I would use the second sentence, but I think that both are equally correct grammatically.

I guess the first sentence is grammatically correct compared to the second.

What about rewriting it for clarity?

This was not John's first encounter with the mob – and it certainly would not be his last.
