Difference between Minor profanity, borderline and non borderline

Some grammar rules (and embarrassing mistakes!) transcend the uniqueness of different regions and style guides. This new International Grammar section by OnlineBookClub.org ultimately identifies those rules thus providing a simple, flexible rule-set, respecting the differences between regions and style guides. You can feel free to ask general questions about spelling and grammar. You can also provide example sentences for other members to proofread and inform you of any grammar mistakes.

Difference between Minor profanity, borderline and non borderline

Post by Tonze »

I have sometimes an issue for differentiating profanity, minor profanity, borderline or non borderline words.
Ex:I love f****g photography! What type of profane it is?
When someone calls other"assholes".is it borderline or opposite?

Any help is appreciated!

Most people would consider f*ck nonborderline. I think you'll find that some will consider assholes borderline and others will consider it nonborderline.

I think this issue is subjective. For example, my mom would wash my mouth out with soap (even now) if I said damn. I would consider it minor. If anyone said f**k around her, she would surely faint.

I also take into consideration the frequency of profanity. If every other sentence in the book has profanity in it, I would consider that excessive profanity even if the words used, individually, might be borderlinee. If someone just winces slightly when they read a borderline word, if the book is saturated with them they will surely have a permanent twitch after reading it.

This is a topic that hunts my sleep sometimes. but I normally judge profanity based on the level of harm that it can provoke. if it is one that is not implied and has a deep sense of offense, then it's minor. however, if it is the other way round, borderline.

Subjectively and as assumed from media:
Non-Borderline: f*ck, sh*t, cunt, etc.
Borderline: damn, pussy, Jesus, etc

Anything that you known you’ll get a snark reaction for by an older semi-conservative person is non-borderline.

Anything that you might just-just get away with from that same person, only getting minor attention but not having animated reaction, would suffice as borderline.

This said, I apple it to context too (hence the example of the semi-conservative person helps).

I think it depends on the intention on the context. If it deliberatelly done , it will be profane.

The issue of profanity is actually a very subjective issue. What one person might consider absolute profanity might actually be borderline to me depending on the society I was raised or I live in.

I also consider the extent of profanity based on the context and the amount of cursing in the book. But like most people have stated, the profanity aspect is largely subjective.

f...k is minor profanity, non borderline but sometimes the contest in which the word was used must be taken into account.

I initially had problems with this but then someone told me that whatever I cannot say before a child qualifies as "non-borderline" profanity.

But according to me, every profane word cannot be said to a child. Then how do I really differentiate between "borderline" and "non-borderline" profanity

I am also a little confused and have had a few reviews rejected because of this. I too agree that it is very subjective. Context and culture helps to determine in my opinion. I like the analysis by Helen Muriithi, " anything you can't say before a child is non-borderline".
I think I will say anything that goes over the profanity line is non-borderline and anything that is on the line, meaning anything that is not strongly profane but has a hint of profanity is bordeline.
Someone please tell me if I am right.

Minor profanity includes mild, less offensive words like "damn". Borderline profanity, such as "assholes", is context-dependent and may offend some. Non-borderline or major profanity includes highly offensive words, like the censored word in "I love f****g photography!". Cultural norms and personal beliefs significantly influence these categories.

I will mark the first sentence as non-borderline profanity and
the second one as borderline depending on how it is used...
Else it would be only a derogatory word but not profanity.
This is my personal opinion. I will watch this space for inputs.
Thanks for your question... will help new reviewers like me too.
