Post-It notes. I get the smallest ones. Not only can you mark the page, but you can mark the exact line you stopped on. (Line up the top of the note with the last sentence you read.)

The only problem is that in time, especially with a long book, the gummy glue wears off. So I put a couple of extras on the back flyleaf in case this happens.

I have gotten to the point where I tear the post it note in half and use one half at a time to get twice the mileage out of it. If you get the big post-its you can use a razor knife to cut it into thirds as well. I sometimes get these larger ones for free and if it is a color that is hard to read (like purple) when you write on it I slice it up and use it for bookmarks.
