Have You Tried Multitasking While Reading

Post by JaJaBinks »

"How can you crochet and read at the same?" That was a question my brother had asked me a few days ago. My answer was, "easy, it's like eating and watching TV",I told him, but it begged the question for me. Have you tried to multi-task while reading and if so were you successful at it? :eusa-think:

I have read books while waiting in line (grocery store, border waits, etc.).

I can certainly read in public places (like grocery stories, parks, a party), but as far as "multitasking" while reading, I fail. I have to concentrate on the book. I can drown out background noise, but cannot be doing anything else with my hands or mind when I am into a book.

I usually listen to music while I read and my hand does distracted doodles that aren't very good and that I don't notice very much, or I'd listen to an audiobook and draw at the same time. I can't multitask when I have a physical copy of a paperback or a hardcover, though -- that need both hands.

Reading while crocheting must take serious skill! The most I can accomplish is reading and eating, although my friend is a nurse and does night checks while she reads.

I'm terrible at multitasking! Seriously, just awful lol I'm a maladaptive daydreamer, which basically means, I can't control my daydreams. They can start at any time and last, in an extreme case, up to 6 hours. Reading triggers my daydreams more than most things, so I have to constantly fight my own mind to stay on track.

Multi-tasking, this is so me. I can comfortably: read and eat, read and chat, read and toilet. I can arguably do anything while reading.

I have definitely tried to do multitask while reading but I can't focus as much on imagining the book's world if I'm trying to do something else also. I'm good at multitasking with anything else but when reading is involved I'm worse at it. I envy the people that can multitask like that.

One of my daughter's crochets and watches television at the same time and I wondered. Often times when I read, I will have something else going on. Maybe having to ignore something puts one into a different mental state - or something like that?

I read while waiting for something. But I could never read while doing something that needs concentration. It's literally impossible.

I walk on the treadmill and read. I am also a big NFL fan, but have my favorite teams that I focus on when they're on. If it's not a favorite, I'll usually read while the game is on in the background.

No. Anything that requires attention would prevent my understanding what I read. Eating and watching TV is a bad comparison, because it generally refers to mindless eating.

When I reached college age, our family finances were such that it was deemed necessary for me to continue living at home and commute to and from school. It was very infuriating to me that other family members constantly had the TV on -- it interfered with my studies, because I could hear it from clear at the other end of the house, and could not tune it out. That was when I made up my mind that I would never own a television. That was about twenty years ago, and I have kept that promise.
