When I reached college age, our family finances were such that it was deemed necessary for me to continue living at home and commute to and from school. It was very infuriating to me that other family members constantly had the TV on -- it interfered with my studies, because I could hear it from clear at the other end of the house, and could not tune it out. That was when I made up my mind that I would never own a television. That was about twenty years ago, and I have kept that promise.
