Not Ellen Brody.

Hint: The book was made into a film (much like many of the guesses you guys have had.)

Did you see this one which I mentioned earlier ... Nurse Ratched from One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest?

I'm sorry, yes I did see but forgot to comment.

Nope, not Nurse Ratched.

Let's recap everything you know:

Hint that could/would be spoken by the character:

Oh no, not my girl! How can I swallow this pill?!
Well, I'll be sly; you'll not see me cry. But pay for this you will.

-the hint above does not reference a mother/daughter or female/female romantic relationship
-the character my person intends to make "pay" is a man
-20th-century thriller written in second half of 20th century
-male, American author
-female character who is the main character
-the character is not murdered, nor does she murder anyone
-the character is not famous in any way
-the character does not partake in any travel
-the reader dislikes the character
-this is a very well known character and the book was made into a movie
-there is nothing supernatural in the book

character is not: Clarice from Silence of the Lambs, Jeanine from Divergent (WAY OFF), haunted car from Christine, Nurse Ratched from One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Ellen from Jaws

author is not: Christie, Brown, Clancy, Delillo,

EDIT: I am SO sorry!!! She DOES kill someone! It is a secondary character.

...don't stab me :sad-darkcloud:

Stab, stab, stab.
Couldn't resist. :shifty:

Probably a dumb guess, but is the author James Patterson?

The Crucible, by Arthur Miller was published just barely into the second half of the 20th century so .......

... could it be that nasty little tattle-tale, Abigale Williams?

If not, is it a much more contemporary novel?

It is not Abigale.

Hmm..."much more contemporary"? I would say it was published 3/4 of the way through the 20th century. Towards the end of the 20th century.

If you guys didn't see my edit above, I just want to reiterate that she DID murder someone but it was so secondary (to me) that I forgot about it. She is also suspected of previous murders outside the timeline of the book; these are not confirmed.
