It does not play a significant part in the story, but the setting is in a specific location which tangentially contributes to the story; however, the story could have taken place under other similar locations around the USA.

Not really. The main characters are both adult males.

1) American classic.
2) More than one film has been made of this novel.
3) Two main characters. (But I am looking for only one of the two)
4) Both characters are adult males.
5) Takes place in the USA.
6) Setting not especially significant.
7) Male author.

Not lies!

Other than being a classic, what genre could this fall into?

1) The character has no children.

2) The genre could be classified as "fated tragedy".

Tired of us children, yet?

They are cousins.

I really didn't think this one would be that hard. It is a novel which comes up often here in discussions at OBC.

Or, and I think it highly unlikely, perhaps you haven't read the novel.

Another bonus hint: One of the cousins is the one who is sort of the leader. He is not the character we're looking for however.

This novel is so well known that it was referenced in a Bugs Bunny cartoon. More about that later.
