Not Ellen Brody.
Hint: The book was made into a film (much like many of the guesses you guys have had.)

Hint that could/would be spoken by the character:
Oh no, not my girl! How can I swallow this pill?!
Well, I'll be sly; you'll not see me cry. But pay for this you will.
-the hint above does not reference a mother/daughter or female/female romantic relationship
-the character my person intends to make "pay" is a man
-20th-century thriller written in second half of 20th century
-male, American author
-female character who is the main character
-the character is not murdered, nor does she murder anyone
-the character is not famous in any way
-the character does not partake in any travel
-the reader dislikes the character
-this is a very well known character and the book was made into a movie
-there is nothing supernatural in the book
character is not: Clarice from Silence of the Lambs, Jeanine from Divergent (WAY OFF), haunted car from Christine, Nurse Ratched from One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Ellen from Jaws
author is not: Christie, Brown, Clancy, Delillo,
EDIT: I am SO sorry!!! She DOES kill someone! It is a secondary character.
...don't stab me

Couldn't resist.
Probably a dumb guess, but is the author James Patterson?

... could it be that nasty little tattle-tale, Abigale Williams?
If not, is it a much more contemporary novel?

It is not Abigale.
Hmm..."much more contemporary"? I would say it was published 3/4 of the way through the 20th century. Towards the end of the 20th century.
