The character is very rude and isn't liked by very many people.

Is the aforementioned child her natural child or is she merely the child's guardian - an aunt, perhaps?

Her biological child :)

A hint to help speed things up: she's also the aunt of one of the main characters of the novel.

Lady Catherine de Bourgh ? Darcy's aunt in Pride and Prejudice?

I was going to say Mrs. Reed of Jane Eyre who was Jane's aunt by marriage but she had more than one child.

This fair-skinned creature, more fair to be,
Communes with another as fair as she.
Suitors has she by the score and
Though lacking not she pines for more.
Her will succumbs to a noble gent;
A heathen, a scoundrel but she is fain to repent.
She is rescued through love - a higher caste,
Whose power none can survive the blast.
Who, oh who, can this fair creature be?
Twenty questions are reserved for thee.

1 Character is female
2 Author is male
