He was a few years short of 50 years old when he died. I guess one would say "younger middle age".

Not really. It is a simple, lighthearted, and somewhat humorous story so perhaps one could say "humor". I would add that it has a somewhat ironic - "Murphy's Law" - theme to it regarding its twist ending.
BONUS HINT: The setting, with regard to time, is important to the story. It takes place in very late autumn.
