It's an American author and I would say it's historical fiction, romance and it's a bit of a tragedy - or more like it has tragic characters.

There are no paranormal elements and the story is set in the US - the setting doesn't necessarily have an impact, but the time it's set it does. Think social norms and changing attitudes towards the role women play in society. And I can't give more haha!
