Not a hook but the word "hook" is useful as a clue.

But...
It's got something to do with eyes (seeing).
So, binoculars, perhaps?
And binoculars are used for bird-watching.

@Lunastella
DA BING !!!!!! WINNER !!!!!
1) I am actually the opposite of what I appear to be.
A pirate's eyepatch was worn not because a pirate is blind in that eye, but rather to IMPROVE the vision in that eye. The patch would keep the eye dilated so when a pirate crashed into dark areas of a ship he was attacking, after being in bright sunlight, he could pull off the patch and have the ability to see in the dark if only in that one eye, without which he would be at a dangerous disadvantage in a fight.
2) I am usually carried by desperate men, but sometimes by desperate woman.
The "desperate men" of course were meant to suggest pirates, but there were many formidable female pirates too.
3) I am almost always associated with the wearer's profession.
We almost always associate an eyepatch with the pirate profession.
4) I am often seen in the presence of an exotic bird.
The stereotypical picture of a pirate usually always includes five cleshe' elements of description 1) A peg leg 2) an eye patch 3) a cutlass 4) A gold earring (intended to be used as payment for any person who buries him) 5) an exotic bird perched on his shoulder.
YOUR TURN!

And I'm a POTC fan but never thought about an eye-patch.
