Nevermind. I was thinking Voltaire's Candide but he was not British.

Bit of trivia: Voltaire once went to England because he had gotten himself into trouble in France (again) and while he was there one day a group of Brits started following him down the street hurling nasty remarks at him. He turned and said to the group, "So you wish to do me mischief? Haven't I been punished enough by not having been born an Englishman?" To which the crowd cheered and bore him on their backs to a nearby pub.

Juliet in 'Romeo and Juliet' by Shakespeare? I'm not sure if the timeline is right though, I'm not that good with dates. Was Shakespeare 17th century? (I peaked at Gravy's extra hint).
