From mouth to hand

It is bearable,
Living from hand to mouth,
But when there is a little child,
Who depends on your mouth to half-chew the food for him,
Living from hand to mouth becomes scary.

Scary because,
That day the hands are empty,
Like they at times do become,
The mouth finds nothing to chew,
But the child will be staring at it,
Hoping something will come from mouth to hand.

Hmm I'm not sure about the word scary - it doesn't seem right.
